"If a man loses pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured, or far away." —Henry David Thoreau, Walden
God made each of us unique, yet in His own image. He also places us into families to love, nurture and challenge us. Since no two people are alike, every family is extraordinary. I love photographing families, especially when the distinct personality of a family is exposed in their group portrait.
The Benko family has a flavor and rhythm that is a joy to experience and a privilege to photograph. When Lilli approached me about photographing her family, she was apologetic that they wanted to do something different. I was ecstatic! They are a musical family and she had the brilliant suggestion that they bring their instruments and we photograph them by an old piano in the newly renovated North Hall at Veritas. I knew we had a treasure in the making.
The best time for the session was after Christmas, but before their oldest went back to school (in Scotland!). And, although it was brisk outside, we wanted to do some outdoor shots as well. What brave, creative souls! But the true treasure came with indoor photographs. Those are my favorites, especially the ones of Lilli with her violin. The results of their efforts and perseverance are an unforgettable part of their visual legacy.
