Can you play chess?
I never learned to play, but I wish I had. It seems like a useful life skill: thinking ahead, recognizing patterns, strategizing, and tactical thinking. Basically, how to “outsmart” your opponent. Thankfully, there’s not a ton of “opponents” in the photography sector—except for that one grumpy photographer who didn’t want to share the Italian Gardens at Maymont.
I first met Micah years ago, when he was in elementary school and his parents started a chess club. It was really cool—and lots of other students thought so, too—because it grew exponentially every year. Eventually, Chess Club started going to tournaments and knocking opponents off the board (pun intended). And the older students, like Micah, started helping and teaching the younger students.
And then there’s LEGOs. When Micah wasn’t honing his chess skills, he was building LEGOs. He’s got some really cool ones, especially Star Wars ones. But his absolute favorite is Rivendell from Lord of the Rings.
In addition to his intellectual prowess, Micah is a young man with strong character. He’s compassionate, thoughtful, seeks God, and pursues justice—which reminds me of a verse in the Bible, (ironically in Micah): what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6:8.
Micah is living up to his namesake.
“...what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Outside the walls of his school, Micah plays tennis, cello, runs cross country and helps with Children’s worship at church. Additionally, he decided to try a new sport his senior year: cross country. Oh, and he teaches chess. Like most seniors, his days are full.
His future aspirations are as varied as his interests. Micah hopes to get an undergraduate degree in data analytics, economics, or military history. All of which require some sort of analyzing or strategizing… which seems like a very good fit for him.
Congrats on being a senior, Micah! Your next chapter is going to be an amazing one—
